On January 15, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the official revocation of the use authorization for Allura Red (FD&C Red No. 3) in food and ingestible medicinal products. This means that manufacturers have until January 15, 2027, to reformulate their food products, and pharmaceutical companies must complete the process by January 18, 2028. Imported foods to the U.S. are also subject to these regulations.

Allura Red, a synthetic food dye known for its vibrant cherry red color, has been widely used in confectionery, baked goods, frozen desserts, icings, and certain pharmaceuticals. The FDA's decision to withdraw its authorization is based on the "Delaney Clause" of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which prohibits the approval of any food additive found to cause cancer in humans or animals. Studies have shown that exposure to high concentrations of Allura Red can lead to cancer in male rats.
